Position Title: Science Coordinator, Audubon At Home
Location: Audubon Science Office, Ivyland PA
Department: Science
Immediate Supervisor: Paul Green, Director of Citizen Science
 
 
Purpose

Lead Audubon Science's involvement in Audubon At Home and work collaboratively with all parts of the Audubon organization to develop the program as a science-based home- and community-focused conservation initiative that engages people in Audubon nationwide.

 
Primary Tasks
Essential Functions:
  • Direct all aspects of Audubon Science's involvement in the Audubon At Home operation and development, including strategic planning, fundraising, fiscal and grant management, content development, field implementation, support staff supervision, program communication and promotion, and customer service
  • Build public awareness and interest in personal conservation action using all of Audubon's portals
  • Work collaboratively with all parts of the Audubon organization to further develop the initiative, and to align messages and activities.
  • Implement current and develop new externally funded pilot projects that demonstrate the conservation and membership values of Audubon At Home programming
  • Work with State Offices to develop and deliver Audubon At Home programs
  • Develop evaluation tools to assess program impact on the engagement of the general public in personal conservation actions, and on the achievement of Audubon's conservation goals
  • Build connections between Audubon At Home and Citizen Science projects, specifically providing strong support of the Great Backyard Bird Count and its derivatives
  • Develop links with all other Audubon Science programs and initiatives, notably Waterbirds on Working Lands and the Important Bird Areas program.
Additional Functions:
  • Provide scientific and technical support regarding home and community conservation issues, including backyard bird conservation issues, to Audubon staff and the general public.

 
Relationships
Internal:
    The Audubon At Home Science Coordinator will report to Audubon's Director of Citizen Science. S/he will work extensively with Audubon staff and Chapter members nationwide.

External:

    Corporate partners; government agencies, especially the USDA National Resource Conservation Service; public and non-profit conservation organizations; nationwide media and the general public.

 
Equipment (e.g., computer, typewriter, calculator, copy machines, telephone, etc.)

  • Computers and related software (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and PowerPoint)
  • Standard office machines (telephone, copy machine, fax machine)
  • Automobile

 
Qualifications (e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)

  • Bachelor's degree in organismic biology or ecology, environmental science, or urban conservation-related fields.
  • Minimum of three years of work experience in backyard or community conservation.
  • Good, working knowledge of common birds and backyard wildlife habitats.
  • Proven ability to see a project from conceptual stages through implementation.
  • Proven ability to work in both nonprofit and corporate environments.
  • Strong creative, problem-solving, planning, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.
  • Proven success in nonprofit project management, including (but not limited to): setting effective goals and objectives, developing contracts, managing grants, creating and maintaining collaborations with other organizations, developing public awareness activities, meeting deadlines, preparing reports, etc.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong initiative and self-motivation, with the ability to lead in a dynamic team environment with limited direct supervision.
  • Ability to travel nationwide, and to work evenings and weekends, as needed; a valid driver's license is required, as well as a reliable personal vehicle (expenses to be reimbursed).
  • Strong commitment to the mission and vision of the National Audubon Society.
  • Proven ability to handle an extensive and diverse workload while maintaining a good sense of humor and perspective.
  • Prior experience in supervising employees and volunteers.
  • Fund-raising experience.

 
Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Be able to operate an automobile
  • Have the digital and mental skills needed to operate standard office equipment (as per above)
  • Have oral skills necessary to deliver effective public presentations
  • Be able to sit, stand, grasp, lift, carry, walk, climb, kneel, stand, push, and pull as needed
