About Audubon

 

  1. Over one hundred years old, the National Audubon Society is one of the oldest and most effective environmental organizations in the world.
  2. Audubon connects more than one million people with nature each year at Audubon Centers throughout the country, including new urban Centers in Los Angeles and New York City.
  3. There are 500 Audubon Chapters throughout the U.S.
  4. As early as 1945 Audubon began sounding the warning about the detrimental effects of pesticides on birds, other wildlife and the environment.
  5. Audubon is marshalling its national network of centers, chapters and activists to fight Global Warming.
  6. Audubon reaches more than 500,000 school children each year.
  7. Audubon's Important Bird Areas program is fostering environmental stewardship of more than 200 million acres in the U.S.
  8. Audubon's Christmas Bird Count is the longest-running citizen science program in the world.
  9. In 2007, citizen scientists submitted more than 80,000 checklists for Audubon's Great Backyard Bird Count, a new record.
  10. Audubon is leading the environmental effort to save Long Island Sound, a resource to 30 million people annually - 10% of the U.S. population.
